Wonderful on Tap
Water is a precious commodity. One of life's essentials, as we say.
So, it's essential that we look to do right by it and do all we that we can to preserve it and protect it. For you and all our customers - now and for the future.
That's why we've invested in the Green Recovery Programme, a range of projects that will take place across our region over the next three years. This programme will update our water networks using the latest technology, materials and systems, making our region even better for it.
One of the first projects we're starting with is to fit over 150,000 smart meters for our customers in Coventry and Warwickshire.
What a smart meter does
Smart meters are called smart for a reason as they help us spot leaks early, saving millions of litres of water every year. That means more water for homes, factories, schools and hospitals, for instance.
A smart meter will also help you understand how you and your family use water. Over time that could mean you save water – and even save some money, too.
The main difference with a smart meter is that we'll be able to monitor the water flow in the area so we can identify any potential leaks much faster.
And because they're smart, once you have one fitted, you'll be able to see exactly how much water you're using - giving you greater control over your water usage.
We're currently designing some new ways for our customers to see this information, but installing smart meters is the first step.
We won't be changing the way we bill you
You’ll still get the same great Severn Trent water and we won’t change the way you are currently billed. these meters are part of our plans to help maintain water supplies for the future and reduce leakage. They are being installed so we can better understand the flow of water across our pipe network. However, they do have the functionality to be billed meters too. You may discover you could save money if you did switch to a metered bill, but this is completely up to you.
If you would like to switch to a metered bill, you can apply for a water meter online, or you can call us on 03457 500 500.
You will still be charged as normal and in line with our Scheme of Charges which is reviewed and amended on a yearly basis.
There are a few ways we can fit your new smart meter. For some homes, we’ll be working outside your property boundary, so it’s no problem if you won’t be home.
For others, we’ll need access to your home, so you’ll need to book an appointment. Then we can swap out your old meter and install your new smart one. We’ll let you know beforehand if this is the case and we’ll make sure we leave your home as we found it.
Requirements for installation
If you're getting a smart meter fitted, we'll need to switch your water supply off for s short period of time. If you're at home we'll let you know before this happens and when your water is back up and running.
To help our engineers to complete the work we'll also ask you to keep the front of your house clear and park any vehicles nearby.
If you're going out, we'll ask you to make sure you don't leave any appliances that use water running or on a timer - like washing machines or dishwashers.
How we'll collect data from the meter
