Carsington welcomes visitors for Autumn adventures

17th October 2016

Severn Trent Rangers at Carsington Water are encouraging people to make the most out of the Derbyshire reservoir this Autumn by exploring the country park and welcoming in the season change.

Site supervisor, John Matkin says: “Autumn is a fantastic time at our visitor sites and here at Carsington there’s plenty to see and do. One of the best things about autumn is the changing colours in the woodlands as the leaves are transformed to yellow, orange and red. A walk or cycle through the woodland paths is the best way to see this, and on a bright, sunny day this can be captured beautifully on camera.

"Autumn can also bring in the unexpected, as more unusual visitors pass by or drop in on migration. As well as Whooper Swans and skeins of Pink-Footed Geese, keen bird watchers here have already found a rare Yellow-browed Warbler. These autumn visitors are typically found on the east coast as they migrate south from Siberia, so spotting one at Carsington is a treat for local birdwatchers.”

Carsington Water was officially opened in 1992 by the Queen and is the ninth largest reservoir in England.  Since opening, there have been over 220 bird species and 30 mammal species recorded and there’s even an RSPB shop on site as well as a large visitor centre with a restaurant, café and shops.

John continues: “Carsington really is a great place for a family day out, the new play area will keep the kids busy and we also welcome dogs. There’s easy access for wheelchairs and the perfect terrain for keen cyclists who can cycle the eight mile route around the water’s edge. There really is something for everybody so grab a coat and come join us!”

Carsington Water rangers keep visitors up-to-date with activities on their STWCarsington Facebook page and @STWCarsington Twitter profile. Simply follow or like the page and join the conversation.
