Requesting a water or sewer map

Learn how to access the location of our water mains and sewer pipes before starting your project.

Before you start

Before starting any building project, it’s important to know where our water mains and sewer pipes are.

Knowing this in advance allows you to plan effectively and keep your project costs on track, avoiding unexpected issues such as delays, stopping completely, or additional expenses to relocate parts of our network so that your project can continue.

Requesting a map through DigDat

Our water and sewer pipes are on different maps – this means you’ll need to download them separately – there’s a charge for each dataset you download. If you need both, you’re able to buy both at the same time for a discounted price.

You can view DigDat’s user guide to learn how their process works in more detail if you need to. If you need any extra help using DigDat, please contact the DigDat support team directly at support@digdat.co.uk.

DigDat charges for maps because it brings together detailed utility plans and overlays them on Ordnance Survey maps, which involve licensing costs. It also covers the work of combining data from different utilities, maintaining asset records and providing online access.

Charges for maps are outlined in our Charging Arrangement Document which is updated each year.

Statutory access means free, approved access to underground utility maps (like water, gas, electricity, and telecoms). It’s designed for organisations with legal responsibilities (such as councils, utility companies, and government bodies) to check where assets are before digging.

To get this access, users need to apply, show proof of their role, and follow the rules. These include not charging the public for maps or reselling the data.

When you’re building or developing, it’s important to look after our water and wastewater pipes. Damage can cause leaks, pollution, and expensive repairs. By protecting these systems, we keep services reliable and safeguard the environment.

Our Asset Protection team can help with planned work near pipes, development queries, ownership questions, and even issues raised by customers or insurers. They also support with sewer defect assessments and subsidence claims.
