Major water upgrade in Stoke-on-Trent finishes latest phase early

20th March, 2026

The latest phase of works in Severn Trent’s £25 million investment to secure a reliable water supply for communities across Stoke-on-Trent has completed ahead of schedule.

The wider programme, spanning Hanley, Sneyd Green and Burslem, will see around 40km of water pipes replaced with brand-new, resilient mains.

This long-term upgrade will help protect customers’ supplies for decades to come, reducing leaks, and supporting a growing city.

Keelings Road has been finished earlier than planned, and teams are preparing to move on to the next stretch between Town Road and Old Town Road which will be ongoing until May 15th with Severn Trent and its contractor McAndrew Utilities working hard to minimise disruption throughout.

To allow teams to work safely, a lane closure will be in place between Hulton Street and Old Town Road. However, traffic will still be able to flow in both directions.

Customers travelling north from Hanley along Town Road will use the bus lane under temporary traffic light control, keeping the area moving while work progresses.

Access on the new phase of works will be maintained for residents, businesses and emergency services, and all shops will remain open as usual. The junction with Plough Street will be temporarily closed, while Greville Street residents will continue to have access to their homes.

Dylan Latham, Severn Trent project manager, said: “We’re pleased with the progress being made in Stoke-on-Trent and want to thank everyone for their continued patience and support. Finishing the latest phase early means we’re able to move forward sooner with delivering long-lasting improvements that will benefit the whole community. We appreciate this type of work can be disruptive, and we’re doing everything we can to keep the area moving while investing in a stronger, more reliable water network for the future.”

Customers with accessibility requirements are encouraged to speak to the onsite team so arrangements can be made. Businesses that rely on visiting customers can also access help through the company’s Business Loss Team if they believe the works are affecting trade.

Updates on the scheme will be shared at www.stwater.co.uk/in-my-area/planned-improvements/stoke-dma-staffordshire and the Nextdoor app.
