We’re investing in Stoke-on-Trent's future
We’re investing over £18 Million in the wastewater system to give us more capacity for the future in times when there’s storms or heavy rainfall. This will help to protect our rivers and all the other places we enjoy.
Investing in the wastewater system helps prevent flooding and gives us more capacity for the future. This also helps to protect our rivers and all the other places we enjoy. As you are aware we’ve been working on site investigation works to help us develop a solution for our project to create more storage for wastewater in times when there’s storms or heavy rainfall.
The aim is to improve the quality of our local waterways. By reducing intermittent discharges from selected Combined Sewer Overflows ( CSO’s), we are taking steps to protect and enhance the environment.
These works are part of a wider plan to improve the condition of the Fowlea Brook, all the way from its source to where it joins the River Trent.
Our goal is to bring the Fowlea Brook up to a ‘good’ standard, as defined by the Environment Agency’s classification system, supporting cleaner water and healthier ecosystems for local wildlife and communities.
The project includes building a 20-meter underground tank to store 5,200 cubic meters of floodwater, along with new pipelines and control kiosks to manage water flow and reduce flood risk. After construction, the area will be restored with minimal visible changes, preserving its use as a community space.
The team have been piling since October 2025, which involves installing interlocking concrete piles to create a strong retaining wall. This process has now finished and the team will be removing large machinery from the site in the next week.
Following this, the team will then move on to the next phase of the scheme which will be the excavation of the shaft. This involves the team digging out the circular area (shaft area) they created until late July 2026.
This does mean that there’ll be noise whilst the team carry out this work, from the machines digging out the earth work and moving material, which we are sorry in advance for, but every effort is being made to minimise any disruption. Thank you for your patience whilst we are working near your home.
