We're providing a new water supply for Birmingham

Severn Trent knows just how important water is and continually looks for new ways to guarantee that water keeps flowing every day for customers across Birmingham, now and in the future, as the demand grows.

Work has been happening over the last 12 months to put three new boreholes into action.  The water will be drawn from a naturally occurring underground source called an aquifer and will provide 30% of the water for around 35,000 customers in the Edgbaston, Hagley, Moseley and Billesley areas.

Jane Simpson, head of engineering for Severn Trent, explains: “Identifying and putting new water sources into supply is an exciting and unique event.  Before we made any changes we got special approval from the Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) to confirm they are happy with the quality of the water and treatment processes.  So everyone is confident the new water is of the same great quality which people are used to.”

“The new water will be mixed with the current supply in storage tanks, meaning there is only a slight change to the water customers receive and most won’t even notice a change.  However we have let those customers who are getting this new water know in advance to reassure them just in case they had any worries, and we’ve set up a special page on our website here.”

Jane continues: “We care passionately that our customers always have wonderful water, so they can enjoy reviving showers and a perfectly brewed cuppa whenever they want. This is why we take time to discover new, accessible sources which can satisfy customer demand.”
