Water result!  Football and heatwave pushing up demand for water as customers sweat over England’s World Cup progress

13th July 2026

As the UK roasts in the third heatwave of the year and England continue to make progress in the football World Cup, fans have been glued to their TV screens, according to Severn Trent data.

  • During England’s World Cup quarter-final against Norway demand rose at half-time, after 90 minutes and then again at the end of extra time as anxious fans put the kettle on
  • Severn Trent data from 10pm on Saturday to 1am on Sunday, shows demand was 1.23 million litres more than usual at half-time; 2.7 million litres at full-time and 3.34 million litres when the game finally finished after extra time
  • Overall, demand during the game was 8 million litres more than would be expected for that time on a Saturday night and Sunday morning – enough to make more than 53 million cups of tea

Severn Trent Network Operations Lead Howard Perry said: “We’re now experiencing the third heatwave of the summer with no rain in the forecast and water use remaining much higher than normal. While there are no restrictions in place, we’d really appreciate everyone’s support and would ask people to be mindful about how they use water. Demand is also staying high for longer, with peak usage now continuing from 9pm until 1am.

“Small changes make a huge difference, such as leaving the lawn - it will bounce back when there’s some rain, and we would ask people to avoid using sprinklers, as they use about 1,000 litres an hour, equivalent to the same amount of water one person would normally use in a whole week.

“We'd like to reassure customers that we’re working around the clock to keep supplies flowing. Your support in using water wisely will help protect supplies through the summer.”
