Two‑Way traffic to return to Hanley Road as Severn Trent completes latest phase of £25m works
February 19th, 2026
Significant progress has been made on Severn Trent’s essential upgrade works in Stoke-on-Trent with a temporary one-way system set to be lifted.
The company is currently investing £25 million to upgrade the local water network, renewing nearly 25miles of pipes to reduce the number of leaks and issues in the area.
With work on Chell Street, Town Road, and Hulton Street progressing well, Severn Trent has confirmed that this section of the project will be completed by Friday, February 20.
As a result, the temporary one‑way system currently in place on Hanley Road will be lifted on the same date, with two‑way traffic fully restored, helping ease movement around the area.
Charlene Richards, Community Communications Officer at Severn Trent, said: “We know these works can feel disruptive, and we want to send out continued thanks to everyone in Stoke‑on‑Trent for their patience and understanding while we carry out these essential upgrades.
“The improvements we’re making will help ensure the water network is more reliable for years to come, and we’re committed to completing each phase as smoothly and efficiently as possible. We’ll continue to keep the community updated every step of the way.
“The good news is that the one-way system on Hanley will be lifted on February 20 which will help with traffic congestion in the area. We’d urged drivers to take extra car as traffic patterns may feel unfamiliar at first.”
The next stage of the programme will begin on Monday, February 23, covering the stretch between Merrick Street and Keelings Road, from the junction at Hulton Street to the junction with Keelings Road.
Key information for road users includes:
- Myatt Street junction closure - No access will be available into or out of Myatt Street from Keelings Road. Homes and businesses remain accessible via alternative signed routes.
- Lane closure on Keelings Road - A lane closure will be in place from Town Road to around No.10. Traffic will be able to travel from Northwood towards Town Road only. Diversions will be clearly signposted, and additional journey time is advised.
Businesses remain fully open, and access is maintained. Access to Richer Sounds and Drive Park Garage will be via Providence Street.
