Severn Trent named top environmental performer as regulators publish landmark reports
29th October, 2026
The Environment Agency, Ofwat, Drinking Water Inspectorate and Natural Resource Wales have today released its first ever joint report Water Industry Performance Report, on the same day as the Environment Agency's 2025 Environmental Performance Assessment ('EPA').
It names Severn Trent as the only company to achieve the highest-possible four-star status in the Environment Agency's 2025 Environmental Performance Assessment ('EPA'), marking seven consecutive years of industry-leading environmental performance.
The company is also one of only three companies to achieve Ofwat’s ‘Good’ category in its performance report – highlighting the company’s strong operational performance across its water and wastewater services.
The ratings reflect the company’s commitment to continue to protect the environment and improve its service to customers, as it’s delivering its biggest investment programme in its history.
The Environment Agency’s EPA assessment looks across a series of measures that include preventing pollutions, compliance, and sustainable water management.
Highlights from the EPA 2025 assessment, and regulators joint report include:
· Delivery all of year one WINEP obligations and around c100 future commitments early
· Achieved 99.5% compliance with discharge permits across 648 wastewater sites
· Achieved 100% compliance on satisfactory sludge use and disposal – 100% compliant in all the nine years the measured has existed
· Delivered the best pollution performance in the sector, and across the past five years
· A reduction in leakage, better than the industry average
· Better than industry average for water quality, and more drinking water compliance tests than any other company
James Jesic, Chief Executive of Severn Trent, said: "Being awarded four-star EPA status for the seventh consecutive year, as well as the ‘Good’ categorisation from Ofwat is a credit to our hard-working teams, the focus we place on operational excellence, and the real, lasting change we're delivering for the environment and customers. We have our largest ever investment programme under way, and while we know the rating system will change in the years ahead for EPA and there is more for us to do, our focus on delivering for our environment and our customers doesn’t change."
The Environment Agency is set to change the EPA measures for the future, meaning the measures and rating will change.
Severn Trent say despite a new rating system, it’s delivery for the environment and commitment to customers will see the company continue to invest and deliver at scale.
Across the Midlands, the company is continuing with the delivery of £15bn into the region and includes transformative projects such as:
· £300m at Wanlip Waste Treatment works to increase capacity, improve treatment and reduce spills.
· Bringing online a huge storm tank in Stroud, a £25m investment that will see 7,300,000 litres additional capacity stored to reduce spills
· Continuing with the delivery of its accelerated spills programme, that’s delivered over 3,000 interventions and in 2025, reduced storm overflow spills by 41%, albeit it in a drier than normal year.
· £10m at Draycote Water to boost its capacity to hold an additional 1,400,000 of water, around 560 Olympic sized swimming pools to increase water resilience.
· £140m investment in Witches Oak, a brand-new water treatment works that will create an additional supply enough to supply a city the size of Derby.
· Continuing with delivery £450m investment to replace 870 miles of new water pipes to reduce leaks and save water.
