Severn Trent apprentice takes gold at WorldSkills UK Live event

27th November 2018

One of Severn Trent’s apprentices has won top honours at the recent WorldSkills UK Live event held at Birmingham's National Exhibition Centre.

Jeevan Tamae, an ICA Apprentice at Severn Trent's Cropston Water Treatment Works, won Gold in the Industrial Control category by impressing judges in three separate tasks where he and a partner had to successfully solve a series of complex electrical and installation challenges.

The 22-year-old, who studies his apprenticeship through Severn Trent's partnership with the EEF Technology Centre in Birmingham, attended the event alongside 200 of the UK's most highly-rated apprentices.

Jeevan, from Leicester, said: "I feel so proud to have won the award and it shows that the extra hours at work and at college can really pay off. It's a big moment for me and I look forward to competing in further challenges in the months and years ahead."

Jeevan's partner in the competition was Michael Quinn from Wolverhampton firm, UTC Aerospace.

Mark Smith, Talent and Attraction Consultant at Severn Trent, said: "Jeevan’s done exceptionally well since he joined our apprenticeship programme in 2017. He’s part of a talented group of young people we've brought into the business and we look forward to watching him develop further as he works towards completing his apprenticeship in August 2020.

"The competition at the event was of an extremely high standard and everyone at Severn Trent is delighted for Jeevan. Alongside his partner in the tasks they blew the judges away with their quick and innovative problem solving skills.”

The World Skills UK event had 17 medals up for grabs and involved colleges from across England and Scotland.

Skills and Apprenticeships Minister Anne Milton MP also attended the event.
