Chester-based charitable organisation receives boost from Seven Trent Community Fund

14th April 2023

A project to provide ‘nature play days’ for children in 12 schools across Chester has received a grant of £9,425 from Severn Trent’s Community Fund.

Passion for Learning, which has been operating in communities across Cheshire and Cheshire West for over 11 years, trains, resources and supports volunteers to work with children and families, many of whom are living in poverty or have significant challenges in their home lives.

The charity provides 1:1 support and clubs, organises trips and events to places like theatres, beaches, forests and museums, and provides exciting activities that improve well-being and give children the experiences that they need to flourish, learn and fulfil their potential.

The funding will be used to provide a nature play day for children in the 12 schools that it supports, encouraging them to play outside and enjoy the areas that they can easily access.

Sessions will take place in local nature settings and woodland areas where children can take part in crafts, games and activities and will get an enrichment bag to take home with resources, a book and ideas to encourage them to play outside and enjoy nature.

Diane Clark, Passion for Learning CEO, said: “Playing outdoors promotes independence and develops the confidence and self-esteem that underpins mental well-being however, many of these children rarely play outside or access the natural areas around them, and some have never been to a forest, beach or country park.  This funding will ensure that we can let children know about the amazing natural world that’s within walking distance of many of their homes.

“Whilst enabling children to experience and interact with nature is our starting point, we want the children to be interested in their environment and green issues. We’ll take every opportunity to work with local partners, such as Chester Zoo, and make the children aware of the River Dee and the wonderful conservation projects that are preserving its future.”

Jade Gough, Severn Trent Community Fund Officer, said: “We’re really pleased that our independent customer panel selected Passion for Learning to receive a grant from the Community Fund. This is a fantastic organisation that is doing some wonderful work and we really loved the way they’re helping children connect to nature through play.

“We are always looking for more local projects in the regions in which we work which would benefit from grant funding for a new project and encourage anyone who may be applicable to get in touch.”
