Arkwright Primary pupils get hands-on with major water upgrade project
December 5th, 2025
Severn Trent welcomed pupils from Arkwright Primary School to the site of its £1.5 million water pipe upgrade in Duckmanton.
The special event was a chance for youngsters to learn about the work and engineering behind the project as well as meet the team which were helping to upgrade the water supply for generations to come.
As part of the visit, children were able to see a digger in action and even sign their names on a section of pipe before it was installed underground.
The experience aimed to spark curiosity about how essential infrastructure projects are delivered and the role they play in everyday life.
Lisa Orme, Community Engagement Manager for Severn Trent, said: “It was fantastic to share this project with the pupils and show them the real-world impact of engineering, as well as show them all the work that has been going on in their community and tell them why.
“Giving young people the chance to see how we work helps inspire the next generation and demonstrates the importance of maintaining a safe and reliable water network for the future.”
The Duckmanton project is now in its final stage and has involved installing 750 metres of brand-new water main along the A632 Chesterfield Road.
The next step is for rigorous testing to take place to ensure the pipeline meets all quality and safety standards.
To carry out this work safely, two-way traffic lights will remain in place on the western section of Chesterfield Road from Monday, December 8, until mid-December. Once testing is complete, the road will be fully reinstated and resurfaced before reopening.
Lisa added: “I’d like to take this opportunity to thank local residents and businesses for their patience and understanding while we’ve carried out these essential works. We know roadworks can cause disruption, and we’re grateful for the support as we complete this final stage to ensure a resilient water supply for the future.”
