Your Inspection guide

Everything you need to know about your Water Fittings Inspection.

How we inspect

As part of our licence as a water undertaker, we are required by our Regulator to audit and inspect properties. This is to ensure that we protect the public drinking supply and to assist in maintaining public health.

We use a risk-based approach, which takes into account several factors to establish those premises which may pose a high risk to the public drinking supply.

There is no charge associated with the initial inspection.

However, if your plumbing system does not comply with the Regulations, it is the responsibility of the owner/occupier to undertake and pay for any associated rectification work.

The inspection provides a free audit of your plumbing system along with an opportunity to understand the implications to both you and your employees from the risk of poorly installed/maintained systems.

Failure to comply with the Regulations is a criminal offence.

Prior to our inspection, it will be helpful if you or a representative understands where the water is used on your site. If you have any schematics, it would be useful.

All water-using fittings/appliances will be inspected.

The length of an inspection varies depending on each site. Large sites can be inspected over several visits. Usually, an inspection will last no more than one hour.

The inspection is non-intrusive and therefore will not affect your water supply.

If we find that your plumbing system does not comply, following the inspection, the technician will complete an enforcement notice which will list the contraventions and the timescales for rectifying them.

A formal letter and report will follow shortly after the inspection.

Evidence that the work has been successfully carried out will be required. In some cases, photographs may be accepted.

Our technician will discuss the options with you during the inspection.

In exceptional circumstances, scope may be given for extending timescales if you cannot complete the work in the timescales identified.

We have a list of approved plumbers who can help. They can be located on the WaterSafe website.
