Our Water Resources and Water Resilience

Every five years, water companies in England and Wales must set out a Water Resources Management Plan (WRMP). This sets out our region’s water needs for next few decades and explains what we’re going to do to make sure there’s enough water to go around.

What we wanted to know

This is one of many pieces of research we did to understand the views of customers to shape our WRMP and future investment in water resilience. We want to know what investments they think Severn Trent should be making in 2025-2030 to make sure our future water supply can cope with things like population growth and climate change.

How we did it

Our purpose-built online community of Severn Trent customers ran for one week. On top of this there were two online workshops and a number of in-depth interviews with households and business customers across our region.

We carried out the research in February and March 2022.

What customers told us

About our Water Resources Management Plan 2024
About water resilience in hot weather (2025-2030)
"My parents tend to garden a lot in the summer so are always using the hose and my sibling love cooling down with it. We also have a hot tub that is put up every now and then which also requires the use of water... if we needed to cut down on it there may be a greater struggle compared to others."
Future household customer, Unmetered

"If you pay for a service, you expect it to be there."
Household customer, 35-45, Metered

"I like the idea that we all cut down on water usage so much but some people really won't care so it needs to be drilled home and given through education. Providing more of the gadgets for showers, cisterns etc may help people cut back on water use."
Household customer, 31-45, Metered

"(Alongside leakage reduction and education) compulsory metering will appear like more of an incentive to customers to a) have the opportunity to play their part in reducing waste, and b) saving money by potentially reducing their bills."
