Private sewer ownership
Ownership of private sewers and lateral drains (the ones you share with your neighbours) transferred over to the ten water and sewerage companies in the UK back in October 2011. By taking on these sewers we're able to remove the responsibility of maintainence and repair from you and integrate the management of our sewer network. Making it easier for you and us to keep the sewerage flowing.
Benefits of the transfer
Before the transfer, we found that many homeowners weren't aware that they were responsible for repairs to the sewer pipes. Costs to repair were usually high, and disputes between neighbours over who would pay were common. The transfer solved these problems for customers within our sewerage network area.
It also means that the sewer network can be managed and maintained more efficiently. Any costs for the management of the sewer pipes is also fairly shared across our entire customer area too, making it cheaper and easier for you.
Sharing the load
After the transfer, we now manage an extra 37,000 kilometres of sewers to maintain. That's the equivalent of almost five and a half trips to America from the UK! As well as the extra sewer pipes, we also manage an additional 1.500 pumping stations.
As you'll all benefit from a more efficient network, any extra costs for our management of these pipes and assets is spread across everyone's bill. Meaning everyone pays into the pot letting us repair and improve the sewerage network without pressure on your wallet.
