Pumping station and manhole ownership
Government legislation in July 2011 meant many pumping stations became our responsibility from October 2016. Manholes were also affected by these new rules.
Pumping station ownership
Some properties are connected to pumping stations for removal of their sewage, which then connects to our network.
In July 2011, new regulations came into effect which began a mandatory transfer of ownership of pumping stations dealing with multiple properties.
These pumping stations transferred from private ownership to water companies, and the transfer was completed by October 2016.
You’ll need to let us know if you still have a pumping station that should be under our ownership, so we can make sure the correct changes are made to shift the responsibility to us.
Your pumping station responsibilites
A pumping station that only serves your home, and is within your property boundary, is owned by you. If you rent your home, your landlord will be responsible.
Any pumping station that serves many buildings, but is managed by an agent, is the property owner’s responsibility. This includes retail parks, caravan parks and hospitals.
Our pumping station responsibilities
Private pumping stations built before July 2011 that serve more than one property, and pump waste into the public sewer, are our responsibility.
Any pumping station that serves your home only, but sits outside the boundary of your property will also belong to us.
Manhole ownership
Similarly to pumping stations, regulations around ownership of manholes changed in 2011.
Your manhole responsibilites
If the manhole is inside you property boundary, and is not shared with another property, the manhole will be the home-owner’s responsibility.
If you rent your home, your landlord or letting agent will be responsible for these manholes.
Our manhole responsibilities
All sewers and sewer apparatus outside of your property boundaries – and any sewers shared with another property – have been transferred to your water company.
This means it's our responsibility to repair and maintain any manholes outside your property boundary, or manholes accessing shared sewer pipes and drains.
