Our charges and services

A guide to understanding your water charges.

We review our charges every year to make sure our customers get the best value service, whether you have a water meter or not.

I have a water meter

If you have a water meter, we calculate your bill based on three main elements – water supply (fresh water), used water (waste water), drainage (surface water drainage and highway drainage).

Water supply and used water charges are based on the volume of water used. The amount used is calculated based on the difference between two meter readings.

Managing your bills

Saving water means saving money

When you’re on a water meter, it means you can control your bills based on how much water you use. Making a few small changes can make a huge difference.

Help with paying your bill

We know that sometimes it’s difficult to pay your bills. If you ever need a helping hand, our financial support schemes can off you the support you need.

I don't have a water meter

If you're not on a meter, your bill is based on the rateable value (RV) of your property.

property's rateable value was originally assessed by the District Valuer on behalf of the Inland Revenue. The value was based on the size of the property, the number of rooms inside the property, the amenities available and the overall location. No new rateable values have been set since March 1990.

The services you pay for

Water companies are still legally entitled to use rateable value as the basis for charges, but we are not able to use council tax banding. New properties built since 1990 do not have a rateable value and are metered. If you have a property with rateable values you can apply for a water meter, which could save you money.

Managing your bills

Changing to a meter may save you money

With a water meter, you only pay for the water you use. Many customers find that their bills are cheaper after they switch.

Help with paying your bill

We know that sometimes it’s difficult to pay your bills. If you ever need a helping hand, our financial support schemes can off you the support you need.

Our customer promise

We think water is wonderful. It’s the shower that wakes us up, the hot bath that relaxes us before bed. We cook with it… grow gardens with it… and we know just how important water is in our everyday lives. That’s why all our effort goes into keeping your water flowing clearly and making waste water clean again every single day.

If anything ever impacts your water supply, we will let you know what is happening and what we are doing to fix it. We’ll keep you regularly updated, and if supplies are impacted over a longer period, we’ll also make alternative water supplies available to you.

We could also help if you have additonal medical needs, by adding you to the Priority Services Register. Having your details on the register helps us to plan maintenance work around things like medical treatments that require a water supply, such as dialysis. It also means we’re able to quickly locate you if you need extra help during a supply interruption.

The story behind your bill

Your water bill covers more than just the cost of cleaning the water you use and the waste water we take away. Behind the scenes at Severn Trent we work hard 24 hours a day, 52 weeks a year to ensure that you receive a clean, safe and reliable water supply. To do this, we manage all the pipes and treatment works on a daily basis, as well as invest in them for the future.

Our average household bill for water and sewerage in 2020/21 will be around £358 per year or just 98 pence per day. This compares with an average bill of £415 for England and Wales last year.
