I have received a high bill - could my meter be faulty?

Testing my meter

If you're concerned that your meter may be faulty there is a quick simple test you can do to find out.

If your meter is internal you'll need to

  • Ensure that all of your internal fixtures and fittings are switched off (taps, washing machine etc.)
  • Turn off your internal stop tap and take a note of the meter reading
  • Wait for the minimum of three hours and take note of the meter reading

If you have followed these steps you should not see any difference in the meter reading. If it has changed and you have a digital meter with an
LCD screen please call 03457 500500 as we may need to inspect your meter to make sure that it's working properly.

If your meter hasn't moved then continue the test by

  • Turning your internal stop tap back on and wait a further 5-10 minutes, ensuring you still don't use any water.
  • Take a note of the meter reading

If you have followed these further steps and the meter reading has now changed this would indicate there is an internal leak at your property
and we would advise you to contact a plumber to investigate this for you. You can use our postcode search to find an approved plumber near you.

If there is no movement on your meter during this test then this would show that your consumption is genuine.
