The safety and reliability of drinking water is extremely important to us, as it is to you as a customer. We are committed to providing a dependable, high quality drinking water supply, which fully meets all European and UK standards.
Every day we work hard to ensure that the quality of the water you receive complies with water quality standards, managing and maintaining 185 water treatment works and over 46,000km of water mains 24 hours a day. We have consistently achieved a compliance level of 99.9% or greater since 1997 and, when you consider that the UK has some of the tightest water quality standards in the world, you can be reassured of how good the overall quality of our drinking water is.
We are always looking to anticipate future challenges which may impact on the water we abstract for treatment and we continue to invest heavily in new technology to ensure that we secure compliance. We are proud of our water quality compliance record which, in 2009, was 99.97% at customer taps (mean zonal compliance).
Whilst we maintain the very highest standards and compliance levels we are well aware of common problems that can sometimes occur and, in many cases, these problems can be easily resolved by you at home. This is why we have produced the water quality fact sheets to the right of this page. If your water is
cloudy, discoloured
or has a distinctive
taste
, take a look at the appearance of water or drinking water taste fact cards. There is also a wider range of cards covering many other issues and a full pdf covering all issues can be downloaded by clicking here.
The Drinking Water Inspectorate publish an independent report on our water quality. This is available online at their website, www.dwi.gov.uk
